Inspiration:

This outdoor mural project in historic downtown Hartville, Ohio, was inspired by the desire to celebrate and preserve the history of the town, particularly its vibrant era in the 1950s when Hartville was incorporated. The mural depicts key elements of Hartville’s heritage, including its agricultural roots, the significance of the railroad, and the resulting burgeoning local industry of that time.

Agriculture in Stark County reached its peak by ~1870, then gradually became overshadowed by industries that clustered along the railroads.

Hartville benefited greatly when the Connotton Valley Railroad began providing service in 1882. The freight service and sidings made possible the industrialization of Hartville during most of the 1900s. The F.E. Schumacher Company, the Monarch Rubber Company, the Asplin Basket Factory, and the Hartville Elevator Company might well have been established elsewhere had it not been for the railroad.

Location Choice:

The location for the mural (115 Prospect Ave S) is a prominent spot in downtown Hartville, and selected for its high visibility and easy access, making it an ideal photo opportunity for both residents and visitors. This strategic placement ensures that the mural will be seen and appreciated by a wide audience, enhancing the downtown experience.

Concept and Vision:

The concept for the mural was envisioned by the Village Council of Hartville, who saw the potential for a public art installation to serve as a visual narrative of Hartville’s past. The idea was embraced by property and business owners as well as community members who shared this passion for honoring the town’s history.

Key Contributors:

The mural project is a collaborative effort involving the Village of Hartville, Hartville/Lake Community Development Association, Lake Township Chamber of Commerce, and VisitCanton. We are hopeful this mural will be a meaningful and lasting tribute to Hartville’s historical and cultural identity.
